Boat Transport

Disney World has one of the most varied transport systems you will find anywhere, and the boats are a big part of that. They are calm, scenic, and often the most relaxing way to travel between resorts and parks. If you are planning a trip and want to understand how the different boat routes work, this guide explains everything in simple terms.

Why Use the Boats?

Boat transport at Walt Disney World is often overlooked, but it has some big advantages:

  • It is scenic and peaceful, especially in the morning and evening

  • It feels less crowded compared to buses

  • Many routes drop you closer to park entrances than the bus stops

  • Kids love it, and it makes resort hopping more enjoyable

Disney operates several different types of boats depending on where you are, ranging from small cruisers to larger ferries. All routes are free for guests.

Magic Kingdom Area Boats

The Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake have the most iconic boat routes on property. If you are staying at one of the nearby resorts, you will almost certainly use these at some point.

Resort Launches

Three deluxe resorts sit on the water around Magic Kingdom, each with their own boat services:

  • Disney's Grand Floridian Resort

  • Disney's Polynesian Village Resort

  • Disney's Contemporary Resort (including Bay Lake Tower)

These small launches take guests directly to and from the Magic Kingdom. Departure piers are right near the resort lobbies, and boats usually run every 10 to 15 minutes.

What to expect

The ride is short, quiet, and gives great views of the lagoon. At busy times (like after fireworks), the boats run continuously, but waits can be longer.

Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Boats

Another set of boats runs between:

  • Magic Kingdom

  • Disney's Wilderness Lodge

  • Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

These routes use medium sized water taxis. They are especially pleasant around sunset and are a highlight for many guests staying in the more secluded Magic Kingdom area resorts.

The Magic Kingdom Ferryboats

These giant three deck ferries run between the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) and Magic Kingdom. They are the quickest way to get from TTC parking to the park, and they rarely feel cramped because of their size.

If you want a great view of Cinderella Castle as you approach, the ferryboats are perfect.

EPCOT and Hollywood Studios Area Boats (Friendship Boats)

Over on Crescent Lake, a fleet of Friendship Boats connects EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and the surrounding resorts:

  • Disneys BoardWalk Inn

  • Disneys Beach Club Resort

  • Disneys Yacht Club Resort

  • Disneys Swan and Dolphin Hotels

The route includes multiple stops, but the boats run frequently and the scenery is great. It is also a nice break from walking the long paths around the lake.

Route overview

The standard loop runs:
Hollywood Studios -> Swan and Dolphin -> Yacht and Beach Club -> BoardWalk -> EPCOT International Gateway
Then it loops back around the same way.

These boats are fully enclosed and more comfortable during hot weather than you might expect.

Disney Springs Boats

One of the nicest transport options on property is the boat service on the Sassagoula River. This connects Disney Springs to several resorts:

  • Disney's Port Orleans Riverside

  • Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter

  • Disney's Old Key West Resort

  • Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort

These boats glide along a quiet river with lush landscaping. They feel more like a real sightseeing cruise than simple transport.

Even if you are not staying at these resorts, it is worth taking a round trip just for the atmosphere.

Tips for Using Disney Boats

Boats can pause during storms
Just like the Skyliner, boat transport may shut down temporarily for lightning. When that happens, buses take over.

Arrive early if you have dining reservations
Transportation by water is relaxing, but it can be slower. Always allow extra time, especially if you need to switch routes.

Strollers usually stay unfolded
Most boats allow you to keep strollers open. The larger Friendship Boats and ferries definitely do. The smallest resort launches sometimes ask for folding, depending on crowd levels.

Mobility devices are supported
Most boat types have dedicated boarding ramps or gates for wheelchairs and ECVs. If not, cast members will direct you to the correct boat.

The views are worth it
Whether you are crossing the Seven Seas Lagoon or drifting down the Sassagoula River, the boats often give some of the best resort views on property.

Final Thoughts

Disney's boat transportation is more than just a way to get from place to place. It is part of the experience. The sounds of the water, the breeze on the lake, and the unique views of each resort make these rides memorable. If you usually rely on buses, try adding a couple of boat trips into your itinerary. It adds a calm moment to an otherwise busy theme park day and makes moving around Walt Disney World a lot more enjoyable.
